TMJ Massage: Jaw Pain, Headaches & Teeth Clenching
Have you ever noticed yourself clenching your jaw while working, driving or sleeping?
You're not alone.
Jaw tension has become increasingly common, particularly among people who spend long hours at computers, experience workplace stress or unknowingly clench their teeth during sleep.
Many people don't even realise their jaw muscles are tight until they begin experiencing headaches, facial fatigue or difficulty opening their mouth comfortably.
TMJ massage is a specialised treatment designed to release the muscles surrounding the jaw, face, neck and upper shoulders, helping improve comfort and reduce muscle tension.
At Pirom Therapeutic Massage, we take a gentle, personalised approach to TMJ massage, recognising that jaw discomfort often involves more than just the jaw itself.
What Is the TMJ?
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) connects your lower jaw (mandible) to your skull.
It allows you to:
Talk
Eat
Chew
Yawn
Smile
Every day, this joint performs thousands of movements.
When the surrounding muscles become overworked or tense, normal jaw movement may become uncomfortable.
Common Symptoms
People experiencing jaw muscle tension may notice:
Jaw tightness
Facial muscle fatigue
Clicking or popping
Morning jaw stiffness
Teeth clenching
Teeth grinding (bruxism)
Tension headaches
Neck pain
Shoulder tightness
Difficulty opening the mouth comfortably
Not every symptom is caused by the muscles alone, which is why assessment is important.
What Causes Jaw Muscle Tension?
Many factors may contribute, including:
Stress
Teeth grinding during sleep
Long hours at a computer
Poor posture
Forward head position
Jaw clenching while concentrating
Previous dental procedures
Heavy chewing habits
Often, several factors occur together.
How Can TMJ Massage Help?
TMJ massage focuses on the muscles surrounding the jaw rather than the joint itself.
Treatment may include:
Masseter release
Temporalis massage
Neck muscle treatment
Shoulder release
Trigger point therapy
Gentle jaw mobilisation
Scalp massage
Many clients notice improvements not only in the jaw but also in the neck and upper back.
Why We Treat More Than the Jaw
The jaw does not work in isolation.
The muscles of the:
Neck
Shoulders
Upper back
often contribute to overall jaw tension.
This is why your treatment usually includes surrounding muscles rather than focusing only on the jaw.
Can Massage Help Headaches?
Some tension-type headaches are associated with tight muscles around the jaw, neck and shoulders.
Massage may help reduce muscular tension that contributes to these headaches.
However, headaches can have many causes, so persistent or severe headaches should always be assessed by an appropriate healthcare professional.
What Happens During a TMJ Massage?
Your therapist will discuss:
Your symptoms
Daily habits
Work posture
Sleep habits
Teeth grinding history
Treatment is always gentle and adapted to your comfort.
External jaw massage is the primary focus.
If intra-oral techniques are appropriate and offered, they are discussed separately with informed consent.
Who Can Benefit?
TMJ massage may suit:
Office workers
Students
Drivers
Healthcare professionals
People with stressful jobs
People who clench their teeth
People waking with jaw tightness
Pirom Clinical Insight
One of our clients came to us experiencing frequent tension headaches and a constant feeling of tightness around her jaw. She often described it as though her jaw was "locked," particularly after busy days at work. During the consultation, her partner mentioned that whenever she was concentrating—whether working, driving or using her computer—she would unknowingly clench her teeth.
Our assessment found significant muscle tension through the jaw muscles, particularly the masseter and temporalis, as well as the neck and upper shoulder muscles. These muscles can develop trigger points, which may contribute to pain being felt in other areas, including the head and temples.
Her treatment focused on releasing the muscles around the jaw, neck and shoulders using gentle TMJ massage techniques, trigger point therapy and soft tissue massage. We also discussed becoming more aware of daytime jaw clenching and encouraged her to check in with herself throughout the day to keep her jaw relaxed.
Before starting treatment, she reported experiencing headaches three to four times each week. After three TMJ massage sessions, she told us her headaches had reduced to less than once a month, and she no longer experienced the same constant feeling of jaw tightness.
While every individual responds differently and headaches can have many contributing factors, this case highlights how addressing muscle tension around the jaw, neck and shoulders may help some people experiencing tension-related headaches associated with teeth clenching.
Persistent headaches or jaw pain should always be assessed by an appropriate healthcare professional. Massage therapy is intended to support muscular health and wellbeing and is not a substitute for medical diagnosis or treatment.

Do I need a referral?
No.
How long should I book?
A 60-minute session is ideal for most first-time clients.
