What Is Remedial Massage? Benefits, Techniques & When You Need One
When people hear the word massage, they often think of relaxation, soft music, and a chance to unwind. While relaxation massage certainly has its benefits, Remedial Massage is designed with a different purpose in mind. It focuses on identifying areas of muscle tension, movement restrictions, and soft tissue dysfunction to help improve comfort, mobility, and overall function.
At Pirom Therapeutic Massage, we believe every person has a unique story. Whether you've developed neck pain from working at a computer, tight hips after hiking around Queenstown, or muscle soreness from training for your next event, your treatment should be tailored to your body—not based on a standard routine.
What Is Remedial Massage?
Remedial Massage is a personalised form of massage therapy that aims to assess and treat muscles, tendons, ligaments, and connective tissues that may be contributing to pain, stiffness, or reduced movement.
Unlike a relaxation massage, Remedial Massage begins with understanding your symptoms and treatment goals. Your therapist will then choose techniques that best suit your condition rather than following the same sequence for every client.
Treatment may include:
Deep Tissue Massage
Trigger Point Therapy
Myofascial Release
Soft Tissue Mobilisation
Assisted Stretching
Sports Massage techniques
Heat therapy where appropriate
Each session is adapted to your individual needs, making every treatment unique.
What Can Remedial Massage Help With?
Many people seek Remedial Massage to help manage everyday muscle tension or recover from physical activity. It may be beneficial for:
Neck and shoulder tightness
Lower back stiffness
Hip discomfort
Sports-related muscle soreness
Office-related postural tension
Muscle tightness after hiking or skiing
General movement restrictions
Stress-related muscle tension
Rather than focusing only on where the pain is felt, your therapist considers how different muscles and joints work together to influence movement.
A Personalised Treatment Approach
One of the biggest advantages of Remedial Massage is that it is tailored to the individual.
For example, two people may both experience lower back pain, but one may have tight hip flexors from prolonged sitting, while the other may have restricted movement after physical work or sport. Although the symptoms appear similar, the treatment approach may be very different.
At Pirom Therapeutic Massage, we begin with a conversation about your symptoms, daily activities, and goals before assessing muscle tension and movement. This helps us develop a treatment plan that is appropriate for your body and your lifestyle.
What Happens During a Remedial Massage Appointment?
Your appointment will usually include:
A discussion about your symptoms and medical history.
A brief assessment of movement and muscle tension.
A personalised massage treatment using techniques suitable for your condition.
Advice on simple stretches, movement, or recovery strategies when appropriate.
Throughout the treatment, we encourage open communication so that pressure and techniques can be adjusted to suit your comfort level.
Is Remedial Massage Painful?
Many people think that Remedial Massage has to be painful to be effective, but this is a common misconception.
Some techniques may feel more intense when working on tight muscles or trigger points, but treatment should never be unbearable. The right amount of pressure is different for everyone, and effective treatment comes from working with your body rather than against it.
Our therapists will always communicate with you during the session to ensure the treatment remains both effective and comfortable.

Pirom Clinical Insight
One client came to us with ongoing lower back stiffness and tightness around the right hip that had gradually worsened over time. During our assessment, we noticed an asymmetrical movement pattern through the pelvis, with increased muscle tension affecting the right side of the lower back and hip.
Rather than focusing only on the lower back, we looked at the surrounding muscles that could be influencing the client's movement. Treatment included releasing the quadratus lumborum (QL), iliopsoas, adductor muscles, hamstrings, and surrounding hip muscles. Gentle hip mobilisation techniques and soft tissue work around the sacral region were also incorporated to help improve mobility.
By the end of the session, the client reported feeling significantly less stiffness through the lower back, greater freedom of movement in the hips, and more comfort while walking. This case demonstrates an important principle of Remedial Massage: successful treatment often comes from assessing the body as a whole rather than treating only the area where pain is felt.
Every client is different, and treatment is always tailored to individual needs, movement patterns, and recovery goals.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Remedial Massage the same as Deep Tissue Massage?
Not exactly. Deep Tissue Massage is one technique that may be used during a Remedial Massage session. Remedial Massage is an overall treatment approach that combines assessment with personalised techniques.
Do I need a referral?
No. You can book a Remedial Massage appointment directly without a referral.
How long should I book?
A 60-minute session is suitable for most clients. Longer appointments may be recommended if multiple areas require treatment.
How often should I have Remedial Massage?
This depends on your goals. Some people benefit from monthly maintenance, while others recovering from injury or heavy training may attend more regularly for a period of time.
