What is Cupping Therapy?
Decompression Where Compression Can't Reach

Cupping therapy uses negative pressure — suction applied through cups placed on the skin — to lift the superficial fascia, skin and underlying soft tissue upward. This is the opposite of every other manual therapy technique, which applies downward compression. That distinction matters: cupping accesses and releases fascial adhesions, fluid stagnation and deep tissue restriction in a way that direct pressure simply cannot.

At Pirom Cromwell, cupping is offered exclusively as an add-on to a massage session of at least 60 minutes — not as a standalone treatment. Our therapists use cupping as a targeted tool within a broader soft tissue treatment plan, applying it strategically to specific regions where fascial restriction is identified during your massage. The cups are then removed and the released tissue is worked through with hands-on massage — integrating the decompression for maximum effect.

We use both static cupping (cups placed and held for 15–20 minutes) and dynamic sliding cupping (cups moved across oiled skin) — selected based on tissue presentation and treatment goal for each area.

Target Areas
Where We Apply Cupping
🫁
Back & Paraspinals

Lifting the thoracolumbar fascia and erector spinae to decompress paraspinal tightness and improve segmental mobility — the most common area for cupping.

🦴
Shoulders & Upper Trapezius

Decompressing the fascial compartments of the upper trapezius, rhomboids and posterior shoulder capsule — addressing chronic tension in the shoulder and neck girdle.

🦵
Hamstrings

Lifting the hamstring fascia to improve extensibility and reduce adhesion between muscle bellies — particularly effective for cyclists, runners and skiers.

🦶
Calves & Gastrocnemius

Posterior calf cupping to decompress the gastrocnemius and soleus fascia — beneficial for athletes, trail runners and anyone on their feet for long periods.

🫀
Pectorals & Chest

Anterior chest cupping to lift pectoral fascial restriction contributing to rounded shoulder posture and restricted breathing — applied with care to avoid sensitive structures.

😬
Masseter & Jaw

Small cup application to the masseter for clients with significant jaw clenching or TMJ tension — applied only under careful therapist assessment.

⚠️ Important — Cupping is Not Suitable for Everyone

Your therapist will review your consultation form and assess suitability before applying any cupping. Please disclose your full medical history — cupping will not be applied if any of the following are present:

Active Cancer — cupping is contraindicated over tumour sites and in clients with active malignancy.
Circulatory Disorders — DVT, varicose veins in the treatment area, peripheral arterial disease or poor circulation.
Blood-Thinning Medications — warfarin, apixaban, rivaroxaban, aspirin therapy or bleeding disorders.
Skin Conditions in Area — active eczema, psoriasis, sunburn, open wounds or inflamed skin in the intended treatment area.
Pregnancy — cupping generally avoided during pregnancy, particularly over the abdomen, lower back and specific acupressure points.
Fever or Acute Infection — cupping should not be applied when the client has an active fever or systemic infection.
Certain Medications — corticosteroid therapy, immunosuppressants and some cardiac medications may affect tissue response and increase risk.
Frail or Sensitive Skin — elderly clients with fragile skin or connective tissue disorders where suction may cause damage to the dermal layer.

Your therapist makes the final decision on suitability during your session. Cupping marks (redness or bruising) are a normal expected outcome and typically resolve within 3–7 days. Your safety always takes priority.

Why 15–20 Minute Static Hold?
  • Al-Bedah et al. (2019) — Journal of Traditional and Complementary Medicine: sustained static cupping 15–20 minutes produced significantly greater reductions in pain intensity and tissue tension than shorter application times.
  • Cao et al. (2012) — PLOS ONE systematic review of 135 RCTs: most consistent outcomes when cups retained for a minimum of 10–15 minutes, allowing fascial receptors to respond to sustained negative pressure.
  • Ruffini endings in the dermis and fascia require sustained stimulation to produce a meaningful neurological response — meaning short cup application times are unlikely to achieve the same depth of fascial release.

Darker cupping marks typically indicate areas of greater fascial restriction and higher fluid stagnation — not injury. They resolve within 3–7 days.

Every client completes a full consultation form before their session, including medical history, medications and any conditions listed above. This information is reviewed by your therapist before cupping is considered or applied.

Our Approach
Why Pirom Cupping Therapy Cromwell

Cupping applied carelessly can mark, bruise and leave a client feeling worse. Applied thoughtfully by a trained therapist within a structured treatment plan, it produces results that massage alone cannot achieve.

🎓
Internationally Qualified Therapists

Our therapists hold a Diploma of Remedial Massage from Australia and bring hands-on physiotherapy clinic experience overseas — giving them the anatomical knowledge and clinical reasoning to apply cupping precisely and safely. Internationally recognised.

🔬
Add-On Only — By Design

Cupping is always applied within a massage session of at least 60 minutes — so your therapist can assess tissue, apply cupping where indicated, then follow with hands-on work to integrate the release. This is how cupping delivers its best results.

⚕️
Contraindication Screening Every Time

Every client is screened through a full consultation form before cupping is applied. Your therapist reviews medications, medical history and skin condition — and makes an independent clinical decision on suitability every session.

🎯
Targeted, Not Blanket Application

We apply cupping to specific regions where your therapist identifies fascial restriction or tissue adhesion during the session — making the treatment purposeful rather than performative.

📋
Therapist-Led Decision

Cupping is recommended based on your therapist's clinical assessment — not simply because you've requested it. If your presentation doesn't indicate cupping or if there are safety concerns, your therapist will explain and offer an alternative.

Who It's For
Best For

Cupping is suited to clients where your therapist identifies fascial restriction, deep adhesion or tissue that would benefit from decompressive rather than compressive work.

Chronic Back TightnessDeep paraspinal and thoracolumbar fascial restriction that hasn't fully responded to massage alone — cupping lifts the fascial layers that downward pressure cannot reach.
Shoulder & Upper Trap HoldingPersistent upper shoulder tension with a feeling of restriction — cupping decompresses the fascial compartment and allows deeper manual work to follow.
Cyclists & Rail Trail RidersSignificant hamstring and IT band fascial loading from cycling — cupping the posterior thigh improves extensibility and reduces adhesion between muscle layers.
Calf Tightness & Lower Limb LoadGastrocnemius and soleus fascial restriction — effective for athletes, runners and anyone on their feet for long periods in Central Otago.
Rounded Shoulder PosturePectoral fascial tightness contributing to forward shoulder posture — cupping the anterior chest addresses restriction that massage alone struggles to reach.
Jaw Clenching & TMJ TensionSignificant masseter tightness — small cup application under careful therapist assessment for appropriate clients.
Fascial Adhesion & Reduced MobilityAreas where tissue feels stuck or restricted in a way that doesn't respond to standard massage — the decompressive action addresses adhesion patterns compression cannot release.
